Morocco and Spain have launched Operation Marhaba 2026, a coordinated effort to manage the summer return of approximately 3.5 million Moroccans living abroad (MRE). The operation, which began on May 15, 2026, involves enhanced port and airport capacities, additional ferry services, and increased security measures at key transit points such as Tangier Med and Algeciras.
According to official statements from the Moroccan Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the operation includes the deployment of over 1,000 additional staff, 24-hour customs clearance, and mobile health units. Spanish authorities have similarly ramped up resources, with the Port of Algeciras operating at full capacity to handle the expected surge in passenger and vehicle traffic.
This year's edition is notable for its scale, as the number of returning MRE is projected to be 15% higher than in 2025, driven by eased travel restrictions and improved economic conditions. The operation is scheduled to run until September 15, 2026, with contingency plans for peak periods.
