The Morocco-Spain joint commission responsible for transit held its meeting on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, in Tangier. The session was co-chaired by Khalid Zerouali, Wali and Director of Migration and Border Surveillance, and Virginia Barcones Sanz, Secretary General for Demographic Challenge and Territorial Cohesion of the Government of Spain.
The meeting focused on operational coordination for the upcoming summer transit operation, known as Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE), which facilitates the movement of thousands of Moroccans residing in Europe. Discussions covered logistical preparations, security measures, and improvements to border crossing procedures at the Tangier Med port and other entry points.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a smooth and safe transit period. The commission reviewed past operations and identified areas for enhanced cooperation, including the use of digital tools to streamline passenger flows and reduce waiting times.
