Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a statement explaining the unusual weather episode that brought snow to several regions of the country in mid-May 2026. According to the DGM, the snowfall is due to a cold air mass from the north meeting humid air from the Atlantic, creating unstable conditions.
The snow was reported in high-altitude areas such as the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas, including regions like Ifrane, Azilal, and Beni Mellal. The DGM noted that while snow in May is rare, it is not unprecedented, with similar events recorded in 2018 and 2021.
Temperatures dropped significantly, with some areas experiencing lows near freezing. The DGM warned of reduced visibility and slippery roads, advising caution for travelers. The weather is expected to stabilize by the end of the week.
