Morocco has successfully recovered a collection of 72-million-year-old fossils that were seized in France, according to official statements. The fossils, which include remains of marine reptiles and other prehistoric creatures, were intercepted by French customs authorities in 2024 during an illegal export attempt.
The repatriation was finalized on July 15, 2026, following a joint operation between Moroccan and French authorities. The fossils are now housed at the Museum of Natural History in Rabat, where they will be studied and displayed.
This recovery is part of broader efforts by Morocco to reclaim illegally exported paleontological artifacts. The country has intensified cooperation with international partners to combat the illicit trade in fossils, which often targets Morocco's rich geological heritage.
Experts estimate that the fossils date back to the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 72 million years ago. They were likely excavated from the Kem Kem region in southeastern Morocco, known for its diverse fossil deposits.
