On June 29, 2026, GIZ Morocco, the National Ports Agency (ANP), and the Ministry of Equipment and Water presented the results of a feasibility study on e-fuel bunkering at the ports of Jorf Lasfar and Mohammedia. The study identifies e-methanol and e-ammonia as viable alternatives for decarbonizing maritime transport.
The research, conducted in collaboration with international partners, assesses the technical and economic potential of producing and supplying e-fuels at these two strategic Atlantic ports. Jorf Lasfar benefits from existing industrial infrastructure, while Mohammedia offers proximity to Casablanca's shipping routes.
The study aligns with Morocco's National Strategy for Sustainable Development and its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030. It also supports the International Maritime Organization's goal of cutting shipping emissions by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050.
Preliminary findings indicate that both ports could become regional hubs for green fuel bunkering, leveraging Morocco's abundant solar and wind energy for e-fuel production. The next phase will involve pilot projects and regulatory frameworks to attract investment.
