Morocco is experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach up to 46°C in several interior regions, according to the latest forecasts from the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM). The extreme heat is driven by a Saharan thermal low, which is drawing hot, dry air from the Sahara Desert northward.
The affected areas include the Oriental region, the interior of the Atlantic plains, and parts of the Middle Atlas and the southeast. The DGM has issued orange-level heat warnings for these regions, advising residents to take precautions against heatstroke and dehydration.
However, a change in weather is expected early next week. Thunderstorms and rain are forecast to arrive, particularly in the northern and central regions, which could bring some relief from the heat. The storms may be accompanied by strong winds and localized flooding in some areas.
Authorities urge the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and follow official updates. The heatwave is expected to persist through the weekend before the cooler, stormy weather arrives.
