Italian ferry operator Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) has deployed two new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ferries on its routes connecting Morocco with Europe, as confirmed by the company's official announcements and maritime industry reports. The vessels, named GNV Polaris and GNV Orion, began service in early 2026, operating between Tangier Med and the ports of Genoa and Barcelona.
Each ferry has a capacity of 1,500 passengers and 3,000 lane meters for vehicles, with LNG propulsion reducing CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to conventional marine fuels, according to GNV's environmental impact statements. The deployment aligns with Morocco's National Energy Strategy and the European Union's Fit for 55 package, aiming to decarbonize maritime transport.
GNV, a subsidiary of MSC Group, has invested approximately β¬300 million in the two vessels, which were built at the Guangzhou Shipyard International in China. The ferries feature advanced waste management systems and shore-side electricity connectivity for port emissions reduction.
The new services are expected to boost trade and tourism between Morocco and Southern Europe, with Tangier Med port handling over 3 million passengers annually. GNV operates a total of six ferries on Moroccan routes, including conventional vessels.
