Moroccan justice has imposed significant financial penalties on Said Naciri, former president of Wydad Casablanca football club, and Abdennabi Bioui, former president of the Oriental region, in a major drug trafficking case known as the 'Escobar of the Sahara'. The case involves large-scale cannabis resin trafficking.
According to verified reports, the court ordered Naciri to pay a fine of 50 million dirhams (approximately 4.6 million euros) and Bioui a fine of 30 million dirhams (about 2.8 million euros). Both were also sentenced to prison terms, though specific details of the sentences were not immediately confirmed.
The case, which has drawn significant attention in Morocco, involves allegations of drug trafficking networks operating in the Sahara region. The investigation revealed connections between the accused and international drug smuggling operations.
Naciri, a prominent figure in Moroccan football, was arrested in 2023 as part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking. Bioui, a former politician, was also detained in connection with the case. The verdict marks a significant step in Morocco's efforts to combat drug trafficking.
