Morocco and Spain have announced coordinated measures for Operation Marhaba 2026, aimed at facilitating the return of Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) during the summer season. The operation, which began in early June 2026, involves enhanced cooperation between Moroccan and Spanish authorities to ensure safe and efficient transit at key entry points, including the ports of Tangier Med and Algeciras.
According to official statements from the Moroccan Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the plan includes increased ferry capacity, streamlined customs procedures, and the deployment of additional security personnel. Spanish authorities have also implemented real-time traffic monitoring systems to reduce waiting times at border crossings.
In 2025, Operation Marhaba facilitated the return of over 3 million MREs, and similar numbers are expected this year. The initiative is part of a longstanding bilateral agreement to support the diaspora during peak travel periods.
Both governments have emphasized the importance of health and safety protocols, including medical teams stationed at ports and vaccination checks for travelers. The operation is scheduled to run until mid-September 2026.
