Morocco ranked as the third-largest destination for ammonia transported by sea through the Strait of Hormuz in 2025, according to a study by the Ludwig-Erhard-Forum fΓΌr Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft (LEF), a German think tank. The country received 346,100 tonnes of ammonia, trailing behind India and South Korea.
The study, published on June 29, 2026, analyzed maritime ammonia flows through the strategic waterway, which is a key route for global energy and chemical trade. India led with 1.2 million tonnes, followed by South Korea with 890,000 tonnes.
Morocco's imports are primarily used for fertilizer production, supporting its agricultural sector. The ammonia is sourced from producers in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint, with about 20% of global ammonia trade passing through it. The LEF report highlights the growing demand for ammonia as a fertilizer and potential hydrogen carrier.
