Morocco's three main labor unions—the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), and the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT)—have launched a joint campaign focused on the rights of migrant workers. The initiative aims to address legal protections, working conditions, and social integration for this segment of the workforce.
According to the latest available data from Morocco's 2014 general population and housing census, there were 86,206 foreign residents in the country. The High Commission for Planning's 2021 report on the contribution of international migration to the labor market indicated that foreign workers represented 0.3% of the total active population. The unions argue that current frameworks need updating to better protect these workers from exploitation and to ensure their full access to labor rights.
The campaign calls for stronger enforcement of existing laws, the ratification of international conventions, and the development of clearer pathways for regularization and social protection. Union leaders emphasize that protecting migrant workers' rights is integral to promoting social justice and equitable development within Morocco.
