Montana is moving forward with plans to expand a proposed mental health facility near Laurel from 32 to 64 beds, according to an environmental assessment released by state officials. The assessment, published on May 28, 2026, details the potential impacts of the larger facility, which is intended to address growing demand for psychiatric care in the region.
The project, located on state-owned land approximately 10 miles west of Laurel, would serve adults with serious mental illness. The expansion doubles the original capacity proposed in 2024, reflecting increased need identified by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. The environmental assessment evaluates factors such as traffic, noise, and water use.
Public comments on the assessment are being accepted until June 28, 2026. A final decision on the expansion is expected later this summer. If approved, construction could begin in 2027, with the facility operational by 2029.
