According to data from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) for 2024, Mohamed was the most registered baby name in Andalusia, surpassing traditional Spanish names like Antonio and Manuel. The INE reported 1,234 boys named Mohamed in the region that year.
This trend highlights the growing diversity in Andalusia, where immigration from North Africa has increased over the past decade. The region's foreign-born population reached 15% in 2024, up from 10% in 2014, according to the Andalusian Institute of Statistics.
Sociologists note that naming patterns often reflect broader social changes. "The rise of Mohamed as a top name is a clear indicator of the demographic transformation in Andalusia," said Dr. Maria Lopez, a demographer at the University of Seville, in a 2025 interview.
However, traditional names remain popular overall. Nationwide, names like Martin and Lucia still top the charts, according to INE data.
