Suspended EMPD acting chief Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi has declined to respond to claims linking him to a rogue operation that allegedly resulted in the theft of precious stones worth R14.9 million. Appearing before the Madlanga Commission on Wednesday, Mkhwanazi requested time to consult his legal team before addressing the allegations.
The claims were made by Witness K, who testified earlier this week about an alleged plot involving Mkhwanazi and other officials. Witness K's testimony has been described as 'damning' by legal analysts, though the commission has not yet verified all details.
Mkhwanazi's lawyer told the commission that his client needed 'adequate time' to prepare a response. The commission has adjourned until next week to allow Mkhwanazi to consult.
The Madlanga Commission is investigating allegations of corruption and misconduct within the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD). The commission's proceedings are ongoing.
