Taoiseach Micheál Martin has told his Fianna Fáil TDs and Senators that they should have the self-confidence to push back against calls for a Border poll, saying he “goes bananas” when his own party colleagues raise the issue.
Speaking at a private party meeting, Martin urged members to focus on the government's Shared Island initiative rather than discussing a referendum on Irish unity. He said such talk distracts from practical cooperation between North and South.
The Taoiseach's comments come amid ongoing debate about the potential for a Border poll following Brexit and demographic changes in Northern Ireland. However, Martin stressed that the priority should be delivering tangible benefits through cross-border cooperation.
No date for a Border poll has been announced, and the Irish government has consistently said that the conditions for such a vote are not currently met.
