Disgraced former solicitor Michael Lynn has been temporarily released from prison under a scheme that allows prisoners to carry out unpaid community service in lieu of continued detention.
Lynn received a 5½-year sentence in February 2024 for stealing over €27 million from financial institutions. He was convicted of 10 counts of theft and 11 counts of dishonestly obtaining funds from lenders including Bank of Ireland, AIB, and Irish Nationwide.
The release was confirmed by the Irish Prison Service, which stated that Lynn is participating in the community service scheme. The scheme is designed to allow certain prisoners to serve part of their sentence in the community, performing unpaid work.
Lynn, who was once a prominent solicitor, fled Ireland in 2007 and was later extradited from Brazil in 2018. His trial was one of the longest in Irish criminal history.
