The European Union announced on Tuesday that Meta and TikTok have agreed to strengthen their efforts to combat disinformation related to the migrant crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa. The agreement follows concerns about false content spreading on social media platforms during the recent surge in migrant arrivals.
According to an EU statement, the companies will enhance monitoring and removal of harmful content, increase cooperation with fact-checkers, and improve transparency measures. The EU did not rule out imposing additional obligations on tech giants in the future if voluntary measures prove insufficient.
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in Ceuta, where thousands of migrants attempted to cross the border in recent weeks. EU officials have stressed the importance of accurate information to prevent xenophobia and social unrest.
Meta and TikTok have not yet publicly commented on the agreement, but both have previously committed to tackling disinformation under the EU's Code of Practice on Disinformation.
