Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that she has “no issue” with her country hosting Iran’s World Cup team after its training base was moved from the United States to Mexico for the summer soccer competition.
“There is no issue with them being in Mexico,” Sheinbaum told reporters during her daily morning press conference. “We have good relations with all countries.”
The Iranian national team had originally planned to train in the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. However, due to visa complications and political tensions, the team's training base was relocated to Mexico.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico maintains diplomatic relations with Iran and that hosting the team is consistent with the country's tradition of welcoming international visitors. “We are a peaceful country and we respect all nations,” she added.
The 2026 World Cup marks the first time Mexico will co-host the tournament, with matches scheduled to take place in several Mexican cities including Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.
