Ukrainian video game developer 4A Games has officially announced Metro 2039, the next major installment in its acclaimed post-apocalyptic first-person shooter series. The announcement was made on April 17, 2026, through a developer diary video and official social media channels.
Contrary to earlier speculation, the developer did not announce a specific release date or window, such as "this winter." The studio stated that the game is in active development and that more details will be shared in the future. The announcement primarily served as a confirmation that the project is underway.
4A Games, which has studios in Kyiv and Malta, described Metro 2039 as aiming to be the studio's most ambitious and immersive title to date. The developer diary highlighted ongoing work on the game's atmosphere and technology, building upon the foundations of Metro Exodus. The series is based on the novels by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky.
The announcement comes as 4A Games continues its operations amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. The studio has previously detailed the significant challenges faced by its development team since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
