Meta has announced a series of new updates for its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, enhancing interaction, communication, and navigation while expanding the platform for third-party developers. The updates were revealed on May 19, 2026, according to a Meta press release.
At the center of the update is the rollout of neural handwriting, a feature that allows users to write in the air with their finger to compose messages or take notes. This uses on-device AI to interpret hand movements. Additionally, Meta introduced real-time language translation for conversations, enabling users to hear translations through the glasses' speakers.
Other improvements include enhanced navigation with turn-by-turn directions displayed in the user's field of view, and a new developer toolkit that allows third-party apps to integrate with the glasses' camera and sensors. Meta also confirmed that the glasses now support live captions for conversations, aiding accessibility.
The updates are rolling out globally starting today, with availability varying by region. Meta emphasized that all AI processing for neural handwriting and translation is done on-device to protect user privacy.
