Canadian swimming star Summer McIntosh, the world record holder in the 400m individual medley, failed to advance to the final of the 400m freestyle at the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, British Columbia, on Thursday.
McIntosh, who is also the reigning world champion in the 400m freestyle, finished third in her heat with a time of 4:05.12, which was not fast enough to secure one of the eight spots in the final. The top eight swimmers from the preliminary heats advanced.
This is a surprising result for the 19-year-old, who has dominated the event in recent years. She will still compete in the 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, and 400m individual medley later in the meet.
McIntosh's coach, Brent Arckey, said the swimmer was disappointed but remains focused on her upcoming events. "Summer is a competitor, and she'll bounce back," Arckey said.
