Rory McIlroy admitted making 'too many stupid mistakes' after a rollercoaster opening round of 72 at The Open Championship on Thursday, leaving him seven shots behind surprise leader Jackson Suber.
McIlroy, seeking a second Claret Jug, mixed birdies with bogeys in a ragged performance that included a double bogey on the 18th hole. 'It was just too many stupid mistakes,' McIlroy said. 'I felt like I was playing okay, but I kept giving shots away.'
Jackson Suber, a little-known American, carded a 65 to take the early lead. The round left McIlroy in a tie for 50th place, needing a strong second round to make the cut and contend.
