The announcement was made by the Mauritian government, according to Moroccan state media, marking a diplomatic shift for the Indian Ocean island nation.
The decision aligns Mauritius with a growing number of countries that back Morocco's 2007 proposal to grant the Sahara region autonomy while remaining under Moroccan sovereignty. Morocco has long advocated this plan as the only viable solution to the decades-old dispute.
Mauritius had previously maintained a neutral stance or supported the Polisario Front's calls for a referendum on self-determination. The move is seen as a diplomatic win for Morocco, which has intensified its efforts to garner international recognition for its sovereignty over the territory.
The Polisario Front, which seeks independence for Western Sahara, has not yet responded to Mauritius's announcement. The United Nations continues to facilitate negotiations aimed at a mutually acceptable political solution.
