Abdelilah Benkirane, secretary-general of Morocco's Justice and Development Party (PJD), announced that the party will not take part in the next government following the 2026 legislative elections. The PJD, an Islamist party, previously led Morocco's government between 2011 and 2017 under Benkirane's premiership. In the 2021 elections, the party suffered a major setback, winning only 13 seats in the House of Representatives.
The 2026 elections are the latest in Morocco's parliamentary cycle. Official results are still being finalized, and the formation of a new government will depend on negotiations among the winning parties.
