Presidential aspirant Fred Matiang'i has called on the Kenyan government to convene a national conference to address the increasing number of fire incidents in schools. Speaking in the wake of a deadly fire at Utumishi Academy in Nairobi, Matiang'i emphasized the need for stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent such tragedies.
Matiang'i, a former Interior Cabinet Secretary, proposed that the conference include education officials, school administrators, parents, and security experts. He stressed that the recurring fires indicate systemic failures in school safety protocols and infrastructure.
The call comes after a series of school fires across the country, including the Utumishi Academy incident that resulted in multiple casualties. Matiang'i urged the government to act swiftly to protect students and restore public confidence in the education system.
