Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) is intensifying efforts to boost Langkawi's international air connectivity, aiming to attract more tourists and enhance the island's global accessibility. As of June 2026, MAHB has introduced new flight routes and incentives for airlines to expand services to Langkawi International Airport.
Key initiatives include partnerships with airlines to launch direct flights from major Asian cities, such as Singapore, Bangkok, and Hong Kong, with frequencies increasing by 20% compared to the previous year. MAHB is also offering landing fee discounts and marketing support to encourage carriers to operate year-round services.
The move aligns with Malaysia's national tourism strategy to revive the sector post-pandemic, with Langkawi targeting 3 million international visitors by 2027. MAHB's CEO stated, 'We are committed to making Langkawi a premier hub for regional travel, leveraging its natural attractions and duty-free status.'
Currently, Langkawi International Airport handles over 2.5 million passengers annually, with international traffic accounting for 35% of total movements. The new routes are expected to boost this share to 45% within two years.
