The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is currently hearing testimony regarding suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) chief Julius Mkhwanazi's alleged involvement in the 2023 theft of precious stones valued at R14 million. The commission, established to investigate allegations of misconduct and corruption within the EMPD, has been examining evidence linking Mkhwanazi to the incident.
On Tuesday, a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer testified about the recovery of the stolen gems and the subsequent investigation. The officer stated that Mkhwanazi was identified as a person of interest after forensic analysis of communication records and financial transactions. The commission has also heard from other witnesses, including former EMPD colleagues and business associates, who provided details about Mkhwanazi's alleged connections to the theft.
Mkhwanazi, who has denied any wrongdoing, was suspended from his position in early 2024 pending the outcome of the commission's findings. The commission is expected to continue hearing evidence over the coming weeks, with a final report due to be submitted to the Gauteng provincial government by the end of August 2026.
