Lionsgate, LuckyChap Entertainment, and Hasbro Entertainment have announced a partnership to develop a feature film based on the Monopoly board game. The project will involve two writing teams: Neil Widener & Gavin James, known for their work on A Minecraft Movie, and Rebecca Angelo & Lauren Schuker Blum, who wrote Dumb Money.
The collaboration was confirmed in an exclusive report by TheWrap on June 12, 2026. The teams will independently develop separate takes on the property, with Lionsgate and its partners evaluating the concepts to determine which direction to pursue.
Monopoly, originally patented in 1935 by Charles Darrow, is one of the best-selling board games globally, with over 275 million copies sold. The game has previously inspired a 2010 film adaptation that was never released, as well as various TV specials and video games.
LuckyChap, founded by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, has produced films such as Barbie (2023) and I, Tonya (2017). Hasbro Entertainment has been expanding its film and TV slate, including projects based on its other properties like Dungeons & Dragons and Transformers.
No release date or casting details have been announced. The project is in early development.
