The City of Langford is calling on the British Columbia government to reinstate provincial housing funding and pause its assigned housing target. Mayor Scott Goodmanson stated the city needs the funding to meet the provincial goal of 4,316 new housing units over five years.
In February 2026, the province announced it was withholding a $1.1 million grant from Langford due to the city's reversal of some previous development approvals. The grant was part of the province's Housing Supply Act funding intended to help municipalities meet housing targets.
Goodmanson argues that the loss of this funding creates a significant financial burden for the city as it works to accelerate housing construction. He has requested a pause on the housing target until the funding is restored to ensure infrastructure can keep pace with development.
The B.C. Ministry of Housing has acknowledged Langford's request but maintains that all municipalities are expected to work towards their provincially set housing targets to address the ongoing crisis.
