The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has denied Lancashire's request to replace injured seamer Ajeet Singh Dale with Tom Bailey for their ongoing County Championship match against Gloucestershire. The decision has brought the competition's injury replacement regulations under renewed scrutiny.
Singh Dale, who joined Lancashire from Gloucestershire ahead of the 2025 season, sustained a side strain while bowling his second over on the first day of the Division One match at Emirates Old Trafford. Under current ECB regulations, a player can only be replaced if they are ruled out for the remainder of the season, not for a single match.
An ECB spokesperson confirmed the decision, stating the replacement did not meet the required criteria. Lancashire, therefore, continued the match a bowler short. This incident follows similar controversies in recent seasons where counties have criticized the rule's inflexibility, arguing it unfairly penalizes teams for short-term injuries during a match.
The Professional Cricketers' Association has previously called for a review of the rule to allow for in-match replacements for injuries confirmed by scans, to maintain the competitive balance of four-day fixtures. The ECB's cricket committee is expected to review the regulation at the end of the 2026 season.
