A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction, halting the implementation of a controversial U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) decision that would have altered the recommended childhood immunization schedule. The January 5 decision, which was championed by HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and supported by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., sought to downgrade several routine childhood vaccines from standard recommendations to "shared clinical decision-making" between doctors and parents.

The injunction was issued by Judge James E. Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The legal challenge was brought by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other medical groups, who argued the HHS move was arbitrary, capricious, and threatened public health by undermining the established, evidence-based vaccine schedule.

The HHS decision, finalized shortly before a court-ordered deadline related to a lawsuit from Kennedy's Children's Health Defense organization, would have applied to vaccines for hepatitis B, rotavirus, and others. Medical associations contended the change was made without proper scientific review or public input, and was politically motivated.

Judge Boasberg's ruling prevents HHS from implementing the new schedule while the lawsuit proceeds. The court found the medical groups are likely to succeed on their claim that HHS failed to follow required administrative procedures and did not adequately justify the significant policy shift.
