Ivan Milat, one of Australia's most notorious serial killers, was convicted in 1996 for the murders of seven young backpackers in the Belanglo State Forest, south of Sydney, between 1989 and 1992. He died in prison in 2019 at the age of 74.
Despite ongoing speculation and media reports suggesting Milat may have been responsible for dozens of other unsolved murders across Australia, police investigations have not uncovered any credible evidence linking him to additional crimes. The New South Wales Police Force has stated that no formal links have been established between Milat and any other unsolved cases.
In 2019, a coronial inquest into the disappearance of several people, including the case of a missing woman from the 1970s, found no evidence connecting Milat to those disappearances. Similarly, a 2020 review of cold cases by the NSW Police's Unsolved Homicide Unit did not identify Milat as a suspect in any other murders.
While Milat's crimes were horrific, the claim that he is behind 'dozens of other unsolved murders' remains unsubstantiated by any official investigation or evidence. Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information about unsolved cases to come forward, but no credible link to Milat has been proven.
