WASHINGTON — Todd Lyons, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will resign from his position at the end of May, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
Lyons, a career official who has led the agency in an acting capacity since September 2022, submitted his resignation to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The department stated that Lyons will assist in the transition to a new acting director, whose appointment is expected in the coming weeks.
During his tenure, which spanned both the Biden and Trump administrations, Lyons oversaw ICE's enforcement operations. He previously served as the head of ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations field office in Boston and was a key figure in implementing immigration policies under President Donald Trump.
The announcement comes amid ongoing political debates and legal challenges surrounding U.S. immigration enforcement. A successor has not yet been named.
