Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, has held discussions with senior executives from the Chinese smartphone maker HONOR to explore plans for expanding smartphone manufacturing in the country. The meeting, which took place in Cairo, focused on potential investments and technology transfer to bolster Egypt's local electronics industry.
According to a statement from Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the talks covered HONOR's interest in establishing a manufacturing hub in Egypt. The discussions align with Egypt's broader strategy to position itself as a regional technology and manufacturing center, attracting foreign direct investment and creating skilled jobs.
HONOR, which became an independent company after its separation from Huawei in 2020, has been expanding its global footprint. Establishing local manufacturing in Egypt could help the company strengthen its market presence in Africa and the Middle East while potentially benefiting from regional trade agreements.
The Egyptian government has implemented several initiatives to develop its ICT sector and local manufacturing capabilities, including the "Egypt Makes Electronics" (EME) initiative. Attracting a major smartphone brand like HONOR would represent a significant step in this industrial development plan.
