MTN Nigeria has announced a partnership with First WATT to develop a 34-megawatt solar power project, aimed at reducing the company's reliance on diesel generators and addressing the country's unreliable grid electricity. The project is part of MTN's broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
The solar plant, to be built in Nigeria, will provide clean energy to MTN's operations, cutting operational costs and carbon emissions. First WATT, a renewable energy company, will lead the development and implementation of the project.
This initiative comes as Nigeria faces chronic power shortages, forcing many businesses to rely on expensive and polluting diesel generators. MTN's move is expected to set a precedent for other telecom operators in the region.
