Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a heatwave alert for several provinces starting Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The alert, at the orange vigilance level, forecasts temperatures between 40°C and 44°C in affected areas.
The provinces most impacted include Benslimane, Berrechid, Settat, Sidi Bennour, El Jadida, Safi, Youssoufia, and Khouribga. The heatwave is expected to last until at least July 30, with peak temperatures on July 28 and 29.
Authorities advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and children. The DGM recommends wearing light clothing and using fans or air conditioning if available.
This heatwave follows a pattern of extreme temperatures in North Africa during July 2026, linked to a high-pressure system over the region. No casualties have been reported as of July 29.
