Google has confirmed that its Android XR platform will launch its first audio smart glasses later this autumn, marking the company's most serious return to wearable eyewear since the original Google Glass era. The announcement was made during Google I/O 2026, as reported by The Verge and 9to5Google.
The glasses will feature integrated speakers, microphones, and AI-powered Google Assistant, allowing users to make calls, get directions, and receive notifications hands-free. They are designed to be lightweight and resemble traditional eyewear, unlike the earlier Google Glass Explorer Edition.
Google has partnered with Samsung and Qualcomm for the Android XR platform, which will power these glasses. The launch is expected in the fall of 2026, with a price point not yet disclosed. The glasses will support Google's ecosystem, including Maps, Messages, and YouTube Music.
This move positions Google to compete with Meta's Ray-Ban Stories and Amazon's Echo Frames in the smart audio glasses market. The Android XR platform is also expected to support future mixed reality headsets from other manufacturers.
