Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the government has transferred GH¢400 million to an escrow account at the Bank of Ghana as the initial capitalization for the proposed Women's Development Bank. The announcement was made during the 2026 mid-year budget review in Parliament on July 14, 2026.
The Women's Development Bank is intended to provide affordable credit and financial services to women entrepreneurs and small businesses across Ghana. Dr. Forson stated that the funds are now secured in the escrow account pending the establishment of the bank's operational framework.
The initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to promote financial inclusion and empower women economically. The bank is expected to begin operations once regulatory approvals and logistical arrangements are completed.
