Ghana's government has evacuated 85 Ghanaian nationals from Cambodia between March and May 2026, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced. Arrangements are underway to bring home an additional 76 citizens who have expressed a desire to return voluntarily.
Ablakwa debunked reports of a 'fake' immigration order, stating that the evacuations are part of a coordinated effort to assist Ghanaians stranded in Cambodia, many of whom were victims of human trafficking or deceptive job offers. The minister emphasized that all returnees are being processed through proper diplomatic channels.
The evacuations follow a series of reports highlighting the plight of Ghanaians lured to Cambodia with promises of lucrative employment, only to find themselves in exploitative situations. The government has been working with Cambodian authorities and international partners to facilitate safe returns.
As of May 30, 2026, the total number of Ghanaians evacuated stands at 85, with the next batch of 76 expected to be repatriated in the coming weeks. The government has not disclosed the total number of Ghanaians still in Cambodia.
