France has officially appointed Philippe Lalliot as its new ambassador to Morocco, according to a decree published in the Journal Officiel on May 20, 2026. He replaces Christophe Lecourtier, who was appointed head of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) in April 2026.
Lalliot, a career diplomat, previously served as France's ambassador to Iraq from 2021 to 2024 and held senior roles at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. His appointment comes at a time of strengthening bilateral ties between France and Morocco.
The French government confirmed the move in a statement, emphasizing Lalliot's experience in diplomatic postings. The handover is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
