The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday that French citizen Chan Thao Phoumy was executed in China. The ministry stated it was informed of the execution by Chinese authorities and expressed its "consternation" at the decision.

Chan Thao Phoumy was sentenced to death in 2010 for drug trafficking. The execution took place in Guangzhou, in southern China. French authorities had repeatedly appealed for clemency in the case.

In its statement, the French ministry reiterated its opposition to the death penalty in all circumstances and reaffirmed its commitment to the universal abolition of capital punishment. The case highlights ongoing diplomatic tensions between France and China over judicial practices.
