Five people lost their lives in separate crashes on British Columbia roads over the May long weekend, according to police reports. The incidents occurred between Friday, May 15, and Monday, May 18, 2026, with speed believed to be a contributing factor in at least two of the collisions.
On Saturday, a single-vehicle crash near Kamloops killed two occupants after the driver lost control at high speed. Police confirmed that excessive speed was a primary factor. Another fatal collision on Sunday near Surrey involved a motorcycle and a car, resulting in one death.
On Monday, two separate crashes in the Interior region claimed two more lives. In one case, a head-on collision on Highway 97 was attributed to unsafe passing. RCMP urged drivers to obey speed limits and avoid impaired driving.
These deaths bring the total number of traffic fatalities in B.C. this year to 87, compared to 92 at the same time in 2025. Police continue to investigate all incidents.
