The EU-ASEAN Business Council (EU-ABC) has called on the European Commission to intensify its engagement with Southeast Asia and strengthen support for European businesses operating in the region. The appeal was made during high-level meetings in Brussels, according to a press release from the council.

The EU-ABC, which represents European business interests across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), emphasized the strategic importance of the region. The council's call comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of formal EU-ASEAN relations in 2027, marking a significant milestone for the partnership.

Key areas highlighted for deeper cooperation include trade facilitation, sustainable investment, and digital economy initiatives. The EU-ABC advocates for the swift conclusion of ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between the EU and individual ASEAN member states, as well as support for the broader region-to-region trade and investment agreement.

This push aligns with the EU's broader Global Gateway strategy, which aims to boost sustainable infrastructure and digital connectivity worldwide. Southeast Asia is viewed as a crucial partner in diversifying supply chains and fostering economic resilience.
