Addis Ababa, April 1, 2026 — Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos held talks with Nikolay Spassky, Deputy Director General of the Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, in the Ethiopian capital on Tuesday.
The meeting focused on bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of peaceful nuclear energy. Discussions centered on the implementation of a memorandum of understanding signed between Ethiopia and Russia in 2019 for cooperation in nuclear energy, which includes the construction of a nuclear power plant in Ethiopia.
Minister Gedion emphasized the importance of the longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and Russia. The talks are seen as part of ongoing efforts to advance the strategic partnership between the two countries, with Rosatom playing a key role in Ethiopia's energy development plans.
No new agreements were announced following the meeting. The discussions are considered a step in the ongoing dialogue regarding Ethiopia's future energy infrastructure.
