Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed the municipal authorities to replace all conventional streetlights across the city with smart LED lights. The decision, announced on May 21, 2026, aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce the capital's electricity expenditure.
The initiative is part of a broader urban modernization plan. Smart LEDs are expected to cut energy consumption by up to 50% compared to traditional lights, according to government estimates. The project will be implemented in phases, covering all municipal wards.
Officials stated that the new system will include remote monitoring and dimming capabilities, allowing for adaptive lighting based on traffic and pedestrian movement. This is intended to improve safety while further saving energy.
The replacement program is projected to be completed within 18 months. The Delhi government has allocated an initial budget of ₹200 crore for the first phase, with funds sourced from the state's urban development fund.
