Congressional leaders announced an agreement on Wednesday to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), averting a partial government shutdown that was set to begin at the end of the week. The deal extends funding for the agency, which includes the Coast Guard, Transportation Security Administration, and U.S. Secret Service.
The agreement comes after intense negotiations between House and Senate appropriators. The stopgap measure is expected to be part of a larger package to fund other federal agencies whose budgets were also set to expire.
Lawmakers are working to pass the legislation before the Friday midnight deadline. Failure to do so would have triggered a lapse in funding, leading to furloughs for thousands of DHS employees and disrupting critical security operations.
