In a recent interview, historian Claude Boli discussed the history of Black players in the French national football team, a topic explored in his book Les joueurs de couleur en équipe de France. Boli, a researcher at the National Museum of Immigration History, noted that the first Black player to represent France was Raoul Diagne, who debuted in 1931. Diagne, born in French Guiana, played for the national team from 1931 to 1940.
Boli emphasized that the presence of players of color in the team reflects France's colonial history and immigration patterns. He pointed out that the 1998 World Cup-winning squad, often celebrated for its diversity, was not an anomaly but part of a long tradition. Players like Marius Trésor (1970s-1980s) and Lilian Thuram (1990s-2000s) were key figures in earlier decades.
The historian also addressed the challenges these players faced, including racism and discrimination. He cited the example of Alexandre Villaplane, a player of Algerian descent who captained France in the 1930s but later collaborated with the Nazis during World War II. Boli argued that the team's diversity has always been a source of strength, but also a mirror of societal tensions.
As France prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Boli's work serves as a reminder of the contributions of Black athletes to French football. The current squad includes several players of African descent, continuing a legacy that spans nearly a century.
