BEIJING: China on Monday urged the United States and Iran to maintain the “momentum of de-escalation” amid growing indications that the devastating conflict between the two countries could move toward a negotiated settlement, following intense diplomatic efforts.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks during a regular press briefing, responding to reports of indirect talks between US and Iranian officials in Oman. Lin stated, “China supports all efforts conducive to the peaceful resolution of disputes and hopes that relevant parties will continue to show restraint and avoid further escalation.”
The call comes as regional mediators, including Oman and Qatar, have facilitated back-channel communications between Washington and Tehran. While no official confirmation of a breakthrough has been made, sources familiar with the talks suggest both sides have discussed a framework for reducing hostilities, including a potential ceasefire and prisoner exchanges.
China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the conflict, advocating for dialogue and opposing unilateral sanctions. Beijing has also maintained economic ties with Iran, importing oil while complying with international sanctions.
