Rajya Sabha MP Promod Boro has urged the Indian government to implement every provision of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Accord, signed in 2020 to bring peace and development to Assam's Bodoland region. Boro, a key leader of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), made the call during a session in Parliament, emphasizing the need for timely execution of the accord's clauses.
The BTR Accord, signed between the Indian government, Assam government, and several Bodo groups, aims to address political, economic, and cultural aspirations of the Bodo community. Key provisions include the creation of a 40-member Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), special development packages, and the rehabilitation of former militants.
Boro highlighted that while some progress has been made, many aspects remain pending, such as the transfer of additional departments to the BTC and the release of funds for infrastructure projects. He urged the central and state governments to expedite the process to ensure lasting peace in the region.
The call comes amid ongoing discussions about the accord's impact on local communities, with some groups demanding faster implementation. The Assam government has assured that it is committed to fulfilling the accord's terms.
