Blackmagic Design has released a new beta firmware update, version 10.0.3 RC1, which introduces phase detection autofocus (PDAF) support for its Pyxis 6K cinema camera. The update was announced on the company's official support forum, marking a significant enhancement for the box-style camera's autofocus capabilities, which previously relied on contrast detection.
The beta firmware is available for download from Blackmagic's support site. Users must install it via an SD card to enable the new PDAF functionality. The company has stated this is an official beta release for testing and feedback from the user community.
Phase detection autofocus is generally faster and more reliable for tracking moving subjects compared to contrast-based systems. This update aligns with Blackmagic's ongoing efforts to improve the autofocus performance across its camera lineup, following similar introductions for other models like the Blackmagic Camera 6K.
As with any beta software, Blackmagic advises users that the firmware may contain bugs and should not be used for critical work. The final stable release will follow after the testing period. The Pyxis 6K, announced in April 2024, is a compact cinema camera featuring a 6K sensor and an L-Mount for lenses.
